Description

Delicious homemade doughnuts topped with sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground clove
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons or 2 ounces) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup sour cream, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup full-flavor molasses (not blackstrap)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles, to decorate

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375F. Lightly grease two doughnut pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes. Beat in the egg then beat in the sour cream, molasses, and vanilla. Gradually beat in the flour mixture.
  4. Fill a piping bag fitted with a round tip then pipe the batter into the pan. You’ll want to fill each cavity about halfway since the doughnuts will rise.
  5. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes then remove from the pan to finish cooling.
  6. Once completely cool, in a small saucepan, warm up the heavy cream just before boiling. Add the chocolate chips to a small bowl and pour the cream over top. Wait 1 minute then stir together until completely smooth.
  7. Dip each doughnut into the glaze then top with sprinkles.
  8. Doughnuts are best eaten the same day they are made. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • If you don’t have dark brown sugar, you can use light brown sugar.
  • Make sure the doughnuts are completely cooled before glazing.
