- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Zest of 2 oranges
- ½ cup fresh orange juice
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 1 teaspoon orange extract
- Orange food coloring (optional)
- Orange zest, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Mix in vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
- If using, add orange food coloring to tint the batter orange. Divide batter evenly among the three prepared pans.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- In a chilled bowl, beat the heavy cream until it forms soft peaks.
- Slowly add confectioners’ sugar and orange extract; continue beating until stiff peaks form.
- Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of frosting on top. Repeat with remaining layers.
- Spread frosting over the top and sides of the cake.
- Sprinkle with orange zest for garnish.
Notes
- Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature for a smoother batter.
- Chilling the mixing bowl and beaters helps in getting a better volume while whipping cream.
- For an intensified flavor, you can add a tablespoon of orange liqueur to the frosting mix.
